Q&A
How does NFC work?
Think of NFC like a low-energy whisper between two devices that only happens when they’re practically touching. Instead of broadcasting a signal across a room like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, one device (the reader) creates a tiny magnetic field, basically a “bubble” of energy. When you bring a passive tag or card into that bubble, it “wakes up” using the reader’s power, like a battery-free toothbrush charging on its base. They then trade a quick burst of data, which is why it feels so seamless for things like tapping a phone to a digital business card or a payment terminal.
How do NFC chips operate without batteries?
NFC chips without batteries, known as passive tags, essentially steal their power from the device reading them through a process called inductive coupling. When an active reader (like a smartphone) gets close, it emits a tiny electromagnetic field. The antenna inside the battery-less chip acts like a miniature power station, capturing that magnetic energy and converting it into a small electrical current. This brief surge of electricity is just enough to wake up the chip’s “brain,” allowing it to beam its stored data back to your phone before the connection is broken.
How long does an NFC chip last?
Since they don’t have batteries to die or moving parts to wear out, passive NFC chips like ours can technically last decades. Most manufacturers rate the “data retention” of the memory for about 10 years, but the physical chip and antenna usually remain functional far longer.
Are there recurring fees?
Nope. All our pricing is presented transparently up-front. We do not currently have any subscription services.
Do I have to install an app for this to work?
Your customers don’t require any apps to read our cards or chips. Nearly all modern phones have NFC equipped in in them. Some much older phones may require NFC to be turned on.
If you have an older Samsung Android phone, check under settings > connections > tap NFC and contactless payments > tap the switch to turn NFC on.
Other than that, as a TapLeads client, you do have access to our dashboard, which you log into from any browser.
How long does it take to set up?
You’ll have your NFC enabled business card in your hands in 3 business days.
Engagement campaigns and brand concierge setups usually take 2-3 weeks to develop and launch.
What info is required to start a campaign?
You just need to know what your offer is and what improvement you’d like to make to your business. From there we’ll guide you through everything, as no two campaigns are alike.
Performance data usually boils down to improvements in sales. Everything works backwards from there: number of leads generated, number of people engaging with your content and so on.
